A Black Sheep in a Lone Wolf’s Skin

The modern B2B sales team operates like a pack of wolves, each playing a hyper-specialized role in bringing down a high-value deal.
First, you have the SDR (Sales Development Rep). They’re the scout whose sole job is to track down prey and get a stranger to agree to a meeting.
Next you have the Account Executive (AE). He, sometimes she, is the alpha.* They take warm prospects, uncover the pain points, run a tailored demo, negotiate terms, and drive the deal across the finish line (or get cut from the team and replaced if they fail to take down fresh meat).
Once the contract is signed, the AE leaves the meal behind for the Customer Success Manager (CSM)—the pack’s caretaker—to onboard the client and expand the account.
Then there’s me:
A black sheep wearing a lone wolf’s skin.
Same prey, different hunting techniques
I can’t speak for all copywriters, but I am a black sheep. I’m introverted, a bit weird, and spend most of the day inside my head, playing with words to craft money-winning campaigns.
While a sales team wolf pack relies on collective live persuasion to hunt and close deals, I have to think and act like the SDR, the AE, and the CSM all at once.
Every landing page, email, and ad I write has to track the target, dismantle every doubt in their mind, and make the kill while the world sleeps.
Here’s how the two hunts compare:
| Sales (Live Persuasion) | Copywriting (Written Persuasion) | |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | One-to-one | One-to-many |
| Timing | Real-time, scheduled | Asynchronous, works 24/7 |
| Feedback | Instant (read the room) | Delayed (clicks and conversions) |
| Objections | Handled as they come up | Answered before they’re raised |
| Tools | Tonality, body language, likability | Word choice, rhythm, proof, story |
| Pressure | Can hold attention live | Reader can leave any second |
| Presence | Personality does the work | Invisible |
| The Kill | Asks for the deal once | One CTA doing the ask at scale |
Copywriting is a lonely career
I don’t have a pack to back me up. Instead, I take orders from someone higher up the food chain and get tasked with the same goal as everyone else in the pack:
“We expect more leads, more sales, and more revenue.”
Hearing those words makes my mouth water. Despite working alone, I think and move like a hungry wolf pack.
I must:
Scout like an SDR — hooking thousands of cold prospects with one subject line or ad
Pitch like an AE — presenting and closing 24/7 with only the written word
Argue like a debate champ — dismantling every doubt before the reader can voice it
Build like an architect — stacking proof and structural tension until trust holds weight
Retain like a CSM — keeping the reader glued from headline to CTA
Test like a data analyst — killing weak angles and headlines, amplifying the winners
Vanish like a ghost — persuading in a way that makes the buyer feel like they made the choice themselves
Close at scale — converting with one frictionless experience
While a multi-person sales team takes months of recruiting, expensive salaries, and management overhead, a single high-converting ad, email, and landing page hunts non-stop—never missing a lead or taking a sick day.
Do you have an offer and want to bring in bigger, more consistent deals? Let’s talk about putting words on the hunt for your brand.

p.s. I’m not sexist, I’m just being statistically accurate. The AE “alpha” is usually a “he” with over 77.1% of all Enterprise Account Executives being male (Source: Zippia Demographics).
p.p.s. When I work with B2B companies, I often interview their sales team to capture what they say, how prospects respond, and what triggers help to close a deal. This part is key to building landing pages and email sequences that lead to growth.
